Overseas Educated
Qualifications in architecture obtained outside Australia generally must be assessed in terms of equivalence with an Australian qualification.
The assessment of overseas academic qualifications in architecture for the purpose of meeting the academic requirements leading to the process of registration as an architect in Australia is a two-step process.
- Provisional Assessment (a Skills Assessment for Migration Purposes can be substituted for this); and
- Final assessment
A summary of key aspects of these two processes is provided below. However AACA recommends that you carefully read the explanatory notes which accompany the application forms for each process to ensure your application meets AACA’s requirements and is complete.
Provisional Assessment
(a Skills Assessment for Migration Purposes can be substituted for this)
An AACA Provisional Assessment of the suitability of your overseas academic qualifications in Architecture is a provisional opinion on the status of your academic qualifications in terms of equivalency with current accredited Australian qualifications in Architecture.
If you have migrated to Australia without a skills assessment of your overseas academic qualifications in Architecture and you wish to become registered as an architect you will first need to obtain a Provisional Assessment before you can apply for the final academic assessment – the RAE.
If you wish to apply for a Provisional Assessment download the application form – Form R
Final Assessment
Review of Academic Equivalence (RAE)
If you have an academic student portfolio and wish to apply for an RAE assessment download the application form – Form RAE
The RAE Form is for use only by those who:
- have had a Provisional Assessment or a Skills Assessment for migration purposes; and
- have an academic student portfolio as prescribed in section 7 of the application form; and
- are an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia; or
- have a visa granting permission to work in Australia (without limitation); or
- have been requested to obtain an AACA assessment by an Australian university.
The RAE assessment requires you to attend an interview with an RAE Panel. The interview is usually held at the office of the Architects Registration Board in the State/Territory in which you are living.
Please note : Applicants are directed to the Explanatory Notes which accompany the RAE form as these provide essential information about the RAE process and documentation required.
Review of Graduate Equivalence (RGE)
AACA has developed a process whereby people with overseas qualifications in architecture, who no longer have their student portfolio, but who meet certain other criteria, can obtain a final assessment of their qualifications. Click here for further details.
